The four capacities of Curriculum for Excellence are embedded in the purpose and method of Scouting and this is clear in the adventurous and challenging educational experiences our centre offers the young people who visit us.
Our long-standing aim to “promote the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential, as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities”, fits incredibly well with the four capacities of Curriculum for Excellence:
successful learners – confident individuals – responsible citizens – effective contributors
Challenge by choice
The Centre uses the “challenge by choice” method; where the participants set realistic, measurable and individual goals, as opposed to everyone aiming to reach the same goal. Sessions start with discussion on pupil expectations and end with an evaluation of what they have learned and achieved. Pupils are encouraged to make informed choices based not only on previous learning and experiences but on new information gathered whilst at the Centre, encouraging transfer of skills and knowledge between different situations.
We tailor our programmes to your groups needs and have developed a number of resources to help you link the experiences your young people gain with Curriculum for Excellence.
The Lochgoilhead Centre is licensed by the Adventure Activities Licensing Service and is a member of the Institute of Outdoor Learning. We are an approved provider with many education authorities.
What our guests say
Just a quick note to say thank you so much from all of us here at Swinton. We all had an absolute ball – the teachers more than anyone and can’t wait to come back again next year.
